Steps
Before you begin
- Grip
- Hold near the staff center and keep track of the thumb-side and pinky-side ends.
- Stance
- Stand comfortably facing the practice plane. Drex keeps his feet planted while his shoulders and elbows accommodate the movement; exact foot width is not prescribed.
- Plane
- Wall plane for the basic explanation; wall and wheel plane variants are demonstrated.
Things to notice
- Letting the supposedly fixed end drift around.
- Trying to keep a rigid closed grip through the thumb-end version instead of using the demonstrated thumb-joint support.
- Forcing split-same into the front-body wall-plane arrangement instead of using the wheel-plane option shown.
